I suspect the problem is more likely due to software than hardware, because when I booted into Windows (for the first time since I installed Linux over a year ago), Youtube seem to play fine without dropping frames, but I didn't run this for long. I tried running VLC on videos on my HD, and had similar problems - the play would freeze and rames would be dropped. I rebooted the machine, and still had he same problem. Using the 'stats for nerds' option, I noticed that more than half the frames were dropped. I first noticed this when I watched a Youtube video fromFirefox, and the video was extremely choppy and frequently froze.
